Reflections on science, technology, and computing — leavened by personal experience


Surprisingly, I completed graduate school without succumbing to caffeine addiction, but I did seem to need coffee to get tenure.

More to the point, consumers, universities, industry and government are now drowning in digital data. Whether it’s digital music, video and photographs; scientific data from high resolution sensors; or just the traffic of daily business life, petabytes and exabytes are upon us.

The 3-D net will bring us immersive, stereo interaction via ultra-broadband wired and wireless networks, with trans-petascale data stores and ubiquitous sensors and actuators. As William Gibson wrote, “The future is here, it’s just not evenly distributed.”
