Reflections on science, technology, and computing — leavened by personal experience

When did our utopian dreams stagger into an alleyway, drunk on hubris, only to be mugged by our diminished expectations?

It is past time to reunite the big data, cloud and high-performance computing communities. Each can each learn much from the other.

Internet access was once a luxury, but no longer. In a 21st century knowledge economy, high-speed Internet services are the roads, waterways and rail lines of trade and commerce.

The longitudinal value of research data often accrues to disciplines other than those where it was created. We need a new model that judiciously balances investment between the “next big thing” and sustainable cyberinfrastructure, for the latter is itself a crucial enabler of discovery.

Technical knowledge matters, but communication, empathy, and compromise are equally crucial and sometimes more important.
