Reflections on science, technology, and computing — leavened by personal experience


I still dream of the suborbital transport that is described so cavilierly in science fiction novels. A semi-ballistic suborbital flight could cross the Atlantic in less than an hour.

I spent 25 years as a faculty member, research institute leader and university administrator, and I have now been at Microsoft for two weeks. Hence, some of you may be wondering about my initial experiences and perceptions. Busy, exciting, exhausting and fun – all of those adjectives apply.

Surprisingly, I completed graduate school without succumbing to caffeine addiction, but I did seem to need coffee to get tenure.
