Reflections on science, technology, and computing — leavened by personal experience


Licking the cookies refers to claiming action or skill in an area but in a way that prevents anything from happening. It is intended to conjure an image of a cookie plate, where one licks the cookies then returns them to the plate, rendering them inedible by all.

Yesterday (March 21, 2009), Twitter, the microblogging service, turned three years old. I’ve been twittering for two years now, watching the evolution of social networking and the nature of the participants.

Imagine my surprise when I looked up from the pump and saw Elvis at the wheel of a candy red ’69 Caddy Coupe DeVille convertible, parked outside the convenience store. He was lookin’ mighty fine, with one arm draped over the car window and the other on the wheel, harmonizing with a gospel station on…

On December 3, I will embark on the next installment of my own future, which will place me in the center of the ever-evolving computing revolution. On that day, I will be joining Microsoft to head a new research initiative (see the Microsoft Research press release and RENCI/UNC press release) in scalable and multicore computing.
