A commencement ceremony is neither the time nor the place to risk heat stroke and dehydration with an extended pageant in a basketball arena-cum-auditorium or sun-drenched football stadium.

Commencement season has come and gone yet again. When I have been asked, I have only delivered brief, always brief, commencement remarks. Wisdom is best leavened with brevity and levity.

Let’s clear up a few things about the history and functions of those strange hats and robes, the archaic academic regalia one wears at commencement ceremonies. A mortarboard, despite the name, should not be confused with bricklaying or a brick hod. It’s a hat, albeit a funny looking one.
