An updated version of an essay I originally wrote in 2015, with guidance for commencement speakers, appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education in May 2016. Entitled, Commencement Speakers: Be Cool, it reminds us that commencement events are celebrations for graduates, family and friends, not bully pulpits for speakers.
